Hell in Skegness!

by SuburbanHousewife @ 2007-08-17 - 13:50:35

Having grown up living the outskirts of Nottingham, my worse memories of childhood all revolve around the tedious journey every year to our nearest bit of seaside - Skegness, that bastion of Brish seaside tat! Most of those memories also involve getting VERY travel sick and vomiting, and the very word "Skeggie" makes me feel nauseous!

Today I hear that many of the building's on the parade will have to be pulled down due to a large fire. But I can't help thinking that someone missed a trick here, and should have bombed out the whole place while they were at it!

I feel much the same way about Weston-super-Mare. It's just a large expanse of mud and tat.

I remember going there once when I was a kid, but the tide never seemed to come in!

I suppose thats one good thing about rising sea levels due to global warming, it will get rid of a few really horrible British seaside towns!

ps. Love your new avatar!

Oh yes, I agree 100%; Weston-on-Mud should never have been allowed to happen... :-/

 I couldn't agree more!

You realise of course you've just made an emeny of those countless millions who flock to Skeggie year after year for the most wonderful holiday experience the world can offer.... :>>

Just imagine, there would be broken sticks of rock, kiss me quick hats, cheap florescent flip flops and whelks flying everywhere!

Ah, I see you're only 32 which explains why it is a "worse memory".
My kids would think the same but some of us 'oldies' think back with nostalgia at the club day trips we took to these seaside places. Mindst you there was no alternative then as it was long before the "package" was invented and money was tight to be doing anything else.
Saying that I wouldn't go near Skeggie or Cleethorpes now if you payed me! LOL

I take it back - anything added to Skeggie after 1970 should be bombed - I like nostalia, I hate 70's and 80's tat! :D

Reminds me a bit of Betjeman's..."come friendly bombs and drop on Slough" (or similar)- bet he was popular. I think the most disappointing seaside place I've ever been was Southend

Spent my formative summers going x-country (and I probably mean really CROSS country) from Manchester to Lowestoft. In the days when there were no W-E motorways, or ring roads and you had to go through every single little village and it took my Dad, God, probably 8+ hours.

We'd set off at something like 6am and, I kid you not, my sister would be sitting with the orange washing up bowl between her knees from the end of our road until we got there.

I loved Lowestoft and staying with my grandparents. But the thoughts of that 8 hour, sick infested journey... no, no, no!

That would be me with the washing up bowl too, if we had gone to Lowestoft!
